Private Marrakech 5 Days Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Skoura Oasis → Dades Valley

Your 5-day journey begins in Marrakech early in the morning, around 8:00 AM. After breakfast, you will leave the city and drive toward the High Atlas Mountains.

The road takes you through spectacular mountain landscapes and traditional Amazigh villages. You will cross the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, which is one of the highest mountain passes in Morocco, reaching approximately 2,260 metres above sea level. Along the way, you can stop at several viewpoints to take photographs and enjoy the scenery.

After crossing the Atlas Mountains, continue toward Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco's most famous historical sites. Spend around one and a half hours exploring the old ksar, walking through its narrow streets and traditional earthen buildings.

From the higher part of the village, you can enjoy beautiful views over the surrounding desert landscape. After the visit, have lunch in a local restaurant and continue toward Ouarzazate.

In Ouarzazate, you can make a short stop to visit the Kasbah Taourirt or simply explore the area before continuing through the Valley of Roses toward the Dades Valley. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you enter the valley, with red cliffs, rocky mountains and green palm groves. Arrive at your accommodation in the late afternoon, have dinner and relax. You will spend your first night in the Dades Valley.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, start the second day by exploring the Dades Valley. You will drive through the spectacular gorge and see the famous rock formations known as the Monkey Fingers. There will be opportunities to stop for photographs and take a short walk before continuing toward Tinghir.

From Tinghir, continue to Todra Gorge, one of the most impressive natural attractions in southeastern Morocco. The gorge is surrounded by enormous red limestone cliffs, and you can walk through the narrowest section and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. After visiting Todra Gorge, stop for lunch before continuing east toward Erfoud.

The journey then takes you through increasingly dry and rocky landscapes. You can make a short stop in Erfoud, which is known for its dates and fossils, before continuing toward Rissani and Merzouga. In the late afternoon, the great dunes of Erg Chebbi will begin to appear on the horizon.

When you arrive in Merzouga, you will leave the vehicle and begin your camel trek into the dunes. The camel ride takes you through the golden sand of Erg Chebbi toward your desert camp.

You will stop on a high dune to watch the sunset. After sunset, continue to the camp, where you will enjoy Moroccan tea, dinner and traditional music around the campfire. You will spend the night in a desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Day 3: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi Desert

Wake up early on the third day to watch the sunrise over the Sahara. The early morning light creates beautiful colors across the dunes, making this one of the highlights of the trip. After sunrise, return to the camp for breakfast and take some time to relax.

Later in the morning, you can explore the desert by 4x4. The excursion can include a visit to Khamlia village, where you can experience traditional music, as well as a visit to a nomadic area where you can learn about traditional life in the desert. You can also explore the rocky desert surrounding Erg Chebbi and see areas known for fossils and minerals.

After lunch, spend the afternoon relaxing in Merzouga. You can rest at your hotel or camp, swim if there is a pool, walk among the dunes or try sandboarding. In the late afternoon, return to the dunes to enjoy another Sahara sunset.

In the evening, have dinner and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the desert. You can spend time around the campfire listening to traditional music or simply enjoy the night sky. Since you are staying another night in Merzouga, you do not have to rush to leave the desert. This gives you a much more relaxed experience. You will spend your second night in Merzouga.

Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Agdz – Ouarzazate

After breakfast, leave Merzouga and begin travelling west. Your first stop can be Rissani, an important town in the region and a great place to experience a traditional Moroccan market. If it is market day, you can walk through the souk and see local products, spices, dates and traditional goods. After exploring Rissani, continue toward Alnif.

The road between Rissani and Alnif crosses a spectacular rocky desert landscape surrounded by mountains. Stop for lunch along the way and then continue toward the Draa Valley.

As you approach the valley, the landscape changes again, with thousands of palm trees, traditional villages and ancient kasbahs. Take some time to enjoy the scenery and photograph the valley.Continue toward Agdz and then Ouarzazate. You should arrive in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon or early evening. Check into your hotel, have dinner and relax. This is your final night on the route before returning to Marrakech or continuing your journey elsewhere.

Day 5:Ouarzazate – High Atlas – Marrakech

After breakfast, leave Ouarzazate and begin the final part of the journey toward Marrakech. You will cross the High Atlas Mountains again, travelling through spectacular mountain scenery and traditional villages. If you did not have enough time to properly visit Aït Ben Haddou on Day 1, you can make a longer stop there during the morning. Otherwise, continue directly toward the Tizi n'Tichka Pass.

Make several short stops along the mountain road to enjoy the panoramic views. Have lunch along the way before continuing toward Marrakech. As you descend from the mountains, the scenery gradually changes from the dry Atlas landscape to the greener plains around Marrakech.

You should arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon or early evening, depending on the number of stops. This completes your 5-day journey through southern Morocco, including the High Atlas Mountains, Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Erfoud, Rissani, the Erg Chebbi dunes and the Sahara desert.

This 5-day Marrakech to Merzouga trip was an amazing experience from beginning to end. We loved seeing how quickly the landscape changed from the Atlas Mountains to the valleys, kasbahs and finally the Sahara Desert. Aït Ben Haddou and Todra Gorge were beautiful, but the highlight was definitely arriving in Merzouga and watching the sunset over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The desert camp was a wonderful experience, with delicious Moroccan food, music around the campfire and an incredible night under the stars. The itinerary was well organized and gave us enough time to enjoy each place without feeling too rushed.
