Marrakech to Fes 2 days desert tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Dades Valley → Merzouga Desert

Your adventure begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. Leaving the lively streets of the Red City behind, we head south toward the spectacular landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains.

Our first major part of the journey is the scenic drive across the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, one of the highest paved mountain passes in Morocco. As the road winds through the mountains, you’ll have opportunities to stop at panoramic viewpoints, take photographs, and admire traditional Berber villages built into the hillsides.

We continue toward the historic Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most famous fortified villages. Take some time to walk through its narrow lanes, admire the earthen architecture, and enjoy views over the surrounding valley. The area has also been used as a filming location for several internationally known movies and television productions.

After visiting Aït Ben Haddou, we continue through the Ounila Valley and toward Ouarzazate, often known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” From here, the scenery gradually changes as we travel through the Valley of Roses and into the dramatic landscapes of the Dades Valley.

We make our way through the valley, surrounded by towering cliffs, unusual rock formations, and winding roads. Depending on the timing, we can stop at scenic viewpoints and small villages along the route, giving you a chance to stretch your legs and experience the changing landscapes of southern Morocco. After continuing east, the scenery becomes increasingly arid as we approach the Sahara.

We pass through towns and desert landscapes on the long journey toward Merzouga, the gateway to the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes.Arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon, we meet our camel guides and begin our camel trek into the golden dunes.

Riding across the Sahara as the sun begins to set is one of the highlights of the journey, with the changing colors of the sand creating a beautiful desert atmosphere. We arrive at our traditional desert camp, where you’ll have time to settle into your accommodation and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. In the evening, a traditional Moroccan dinner is served, followed by Berber music, drumming, and dancing around the campfire.

Finally, take some time to step away from the campfire and look up at the night sky. Far from the lights of the cities, the Sahara offers exceptional opportunities for stargazing.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert → Ziz valley → Azrou → Ifrane → Midle atlas Mountains → Fes

Wake up early in the morning for one of the most memorable moments of the trip: sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. As the first sunlight reaches the sand, the dunes gradually change from deep shadows to warm golden and orange tones. After sunrise, return to the desert camp by camel. Once back in Merzouga, enjoy breakfast and some time to freshen up before beginning the journey north toward Fes.

Leaving the Sahara behind, we travel through the dramatic landscapes of southeastern Morocco. Along the way, we pass through the Ziz Valley, famous for its lush palm groves contrasting with the surrounding rocky and desert scenery. There will be opportunities to stop at panoramic viewpoints and photograph the valley from above.

We continue toward Midelt, a mountain town situated between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas ranges. Depending on the schedule, we can make a stop here for lunch and a short break before continuing north. The landscape changes once again as we climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains.

The dry desert scenery gives way to greener mountain landscapes, forests, winding roads, and traditional villages. One of the most interesting stops along the route is the cedar forest, home to the famous Barbary macaques. With some time available, you can take a short walk through the forest and enjoy the cooler mountain air.

We then continue through the Middle Atlas, passing mountain villages and scenic viewpoints before descending toward the plains surrounding Fes.By late afternoon or evening, we arrive in Fes, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad. After two days of dramatic landscapes from the High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara and back through the Middle Atlas—you’ll have reached one of Morocco’s most historic imperial cities.
